Living in the present moment is a term that is often used, but what does it actually mean? And is it really important? Perhaps you are thinking that it is just a random term with little substance or relevance? It’s a trendy term that has become popular in recent years? In the latest article from Becoming Aware, I’m looking at the phrase in more detail, what it actually means, why it is so important and my top ten tips as to how you can live in the present moment.
What does it mean to be in the present moment?
It means that you are aware and alive to what is happening at this very moment. To be in the ‘here and now’, you are not distracted by what has gone on in the past and you are not anxious or worried about what might happen in the future. You are focusing on what’s happening right now, which when you think about it is the only thing we can control. In essence you are cutting out those unimportant things of life and your attention is on those things that matter to you, the things that make you happy.
Why is it important to start living in the present moment?
Starting to live in the present moment is vital to remaining happy and healthy and cuts down on you worrying about what will happen, helping to avoid stress and anxiety. It keeps you grounded and connected to yourself. The present moment is the place where you can find peace and ultimately brings calm. Studies have indicated that those who enjoy what is happening in the moment are happier and more productive than those who are stuck in the past or anxious about what will happen in the future.
You cannot stay in the present moment permanently
It is not easy to live in the present moment on a permanent basis as your mind often takes you back to the past and forward to the future. But if you can bring yourself into to the present, especially in times of stress, fear or anxiety you are helping your mind and body to relax and be reminded that in the right now, you are most likely safe and ok.
How do you live in the present moment?
1. Be aware of your surroundings
2. Focus on one thing at a time – don’t try to do too many things at once
3. Appreciate and show gratitude for what you have
4. Accept things for what they are and not what you would like them to be
5. Surround yourself with positive people – those who make you feel happy
6. Practice mindfulness meditation
7. Do deep breathing exercises
8. Take a break from social media
9. Exercise regularly and eat healthily
10. Practice grounding exercises
Just sit in a chair…
One of my favourite grounding exercises is to simply sit in a chair on your bottom with your feet firmly planted on the floor with your hands on your thighs. Really feel your feet connecting with the floor, then your bottom in the chair and your hands resting on your thighs. By focusing on those three things and rotating the feeling, feet on the floor, bottom on the chair, hands on your thighs, you are truly in the present moment where you can bring yourself back to balance and reset your mind and emotions. It’s where you can become realistic and determine your priorities. Whilst sitting, take the time to notice the small things that are around you and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
